AQUATEC STRENGTHENS NATIONAL OFFSHORE CULTIVATION WITH SUBMERSIBLE OFFSHORE FLOATING MARINE CAGE

Based on President Jokowi’s appeal a while ago, the vast marine potential of Indonesia must be fully utilized. The president urged the development of offshore cultivation in Indonesia, just like what has been done in European countries.

To support this call made by President Jokowi, Aquatec (PT Gani Arta Dwitunggal) has long prepared offshore cultivation technology in Indonesia. Andi J. Sunadim, the General Manager of Aquatec stated that his company has prepared various offshore floating marine cages that can compete in international market.

Successfully Applied Domestically and Internationally
Recently, Aquatec has successfully installed and trialed 3 units of offshore floating marine cages
in Situbondo region. Two units are offshore marine cage with a diameter of 20 meter and 16 meter, while one unit was a submersible offshore marine cage with a diameter of 16 meter. These marine cages were the result of a collaboration between East Java Province DKP, BPBAP Situbondo, and PT Gani Arta Dwitunggal, signed in November 2017 for the purpose of development in the area of fish cultivation, especially offshore. These offshore marine cages are intentionally installed in the sea with violent waves, in order to not only develop offshore fish cultivation techniques, but also to test the actual strength of a domestically made offshore marine cage. Aquatec offshore marine cage is able to withstand 5-meter high waves, while the Aquatec submersible offshore marine cage can withstand 9-meter high waves.

What is the difference between offshore marine cage and submersible offshore marine cage? Offshore marine cage is a round marine cage, specifically designed to endure offshore waves. Submersible offshore marine cage is also specifically designed to withstand offshore waves, but it can also be submerged into the water when storm hits and refloated after the storm passes, so it can endure even higher waves. Submersible offshore marine cage made by Aquatec is the first in Southeast Asia.

The submersible offshore marine cage trial conducted by Aquatec in Situbondo is the sixth trial. Previously, 5 trials have been conducted; 4 trials in Indonesia and 1 trial in China. The first trial was conducted in BBPBL Lampung in November 2016. The result, submersible offshore marine cage was successfully submerged and refloated within 1-hour time. The second, third, and fourth trials were done with a new model in Tulamben, Bali in January and February 2017. After the successful trials in Indonesia, the fifth trial was conducted in Hainan, China in June 2017 when Aquatec submersible offshore marine cage was exported for the first time to the bamboo curtain country. While marine cages made by other manufacturers in Hainan were destroyed, the Aquatec submersible offshore marine cage did not show any sign of damage once refloated. This is because the Aquatec submersible offshore marine cage was protected from the typhoon storm while being submerged. It also proved that the technological quality and advances made by Indonesia is able to compete in international market. It is planned that Chinese investors will buy 80 units of Aquatec submersible offshore marine cages in 2018. The next export to China will be done in April 2018.

Technological Advantages
Andi described in detail the tecnical advances of Aquatec submersible offshore marine cage. First, Aquatec submersible offshore marine cage is the fastest submersible marine cage in the world in the submersion and refloating processes. The submersion process only takes 5 minutes, while the refloating process only takes 10 minutes. The submersion process can even be done without supervision (the marine cage can be left alone). This is important for quick response when storm hits. The depth of submersion is 10-15 meters below seawater surface.

Aside from avoiding typhoon storm and waves, Aquatec submersible offshore marine cage has other functions. Aquatec submersible offshore marine cage can be used to avoid red tides or plankton booming by submersing the marine cage. The depth of red tide or plankton booming usually does not surpass 2 m. Therefore, the fish are safe inside the marine cage, and the marine cage can be refloated after the red tide or plankton booming ends. With a distribution density for white snappers of 30kg/m3, one unit Aquatec submersible offshore marine cage can harvest 100 tons of white snappers, with a selling price of approximately IDR 6.5 billion. The price of 1 unit Aquatec submersible offshore marine cage with 25m diameter is only about USD 100,000 or equivalent to IDR 1.3 billion. Hence it is really reasonably in business point of view. If a more economic version is needed, Aquatec also provides an offshore marine cage with 25m diameter for 5m high wave, with marine cage frame priced at IDR 248 million. Another option is the standard marine cage with 25m diameter for 3m high wave, with marine cage frame priced at IDR 171 million. Therefore, Andi asked the fish cultivators to together become stakeholders for the advancement of fish cultivation industry in Indonesia.
